Donaldson Will Not Defend 3-Time Badwater Title

Elite Ultrarunner Jamie Donaldson and Drymax Sports, LLC announced today that the women's three time defending Badwater 135 Ultramarathon Champion and record holder has decided a fourth title will not be in the cards for 2011

After careful consideration Donaldson made the decision due to personal and professional conflicts that would prohibit her from putting in the miles and hours needed to make a competitive repeat performance at the epic event that begins below sea level and travels through Death Valley to 135 miles to Mount Whitney Portals during the scorching heat of July.

About the announcement, Jamie stated, "Training 200 miles per week to run on such a challenging course takes full focus and 100% commitment, I cannot give this amazing race the attention it deserves at this time to achieve the result I desire."

Bob MacGillivray of Drymax, Donaldson's primary sponsor added, "We are so proud of Jamie, she has been our greatest supporter over the last few years and we agree with her decision completely to take a break from what most consider the toughest road race in the world." Bob added, "Nobody is tougher than Jamie and nobody is more thoughtful, we look forward to supporting her in all of her endeavors both on the course and off for a long, long time."

Donaldson concluded, "Everyone who competes and crews at Badwater are family and I am grateful for all of the support I continually receive from this family... I fully intend to compete in other great races this year and one day possibly make my return to Badwater, just not this summer."

About Jamie Donaldson

Jamie Donaldson, of Littleton, CO, a sixth grade math teacher and running coach and is considered to be one of the top utra runners in the world. She not only holds the women's course record at Badwater with an amazing 26:12:12 she holds the top three women's times of the event's history. In addition, Jamie holds the USATF record for 200,000 meters and in 2010 ran 100 miles in 14:58:23. A documentary chronicling her 2010 Badwater victory will air in Britain on BBC this summer then on TLC in the USA.

Terror, Devastation Brings Tenacity and Perseverance

Drymax socks are proudly made in Rainsville, Alabama. This week terror and tragedy swept through this small textile town in the northeast corner of the state. It appears now that the death count of this small town of about 4,500 people will exceed 32 citizens. The storm emerged out of nowhere and came down upon the town with fury never before seen by the residents.

Above is video taken from our factory in Rainsville just at the tornado touched down just blocks away as workers scrambled for cover.

Schools, homes, restaurants were destroyed. The town is without power and will be for the immediate future. Life is already tough in this this area which relies heavily on manufacturing and distribution businesses to make ends meet. The utter devastation has rendered the area a complete disaster very reminiscent of a war zone.

The fire department is now serving as a morgue and residents are just trying to come to grip with the level of destruction and now their very uncertain future.

We are very fortunate that the tornado missed our factory by just blocks and that all those who work at the factory and their families appear to be safe and accounted for. Everyone at the knitting facility is thankful for their health and looking forward to moving on and trying to return to normalcy as soon as possible, but it will be a long road to put this town back together, fortunately the community is stronger than ever through their tenacity and perseverance Rainsville and the surrounding area will rebuild and flourish once again.

This is a devastating event leaving the entire region short on even the most basic resources to exist day to day. Clothing, food, water and other vital staples of life are in very short supply especially with no electricity. If you would like to help a donation to the American Red Cross http://www.redcross.org/ it would be the most efficient way to assist victims of this massive devastation.

Upon receiving some gentle prodding from the subtle and charming Olga Varlamova and candid Evan Hone, I was reminded that I have been neglecting our blog while favoring our Facebook and Twitter Accounts. Check those out by the way! They are just easier, like microwaving food but probably not as good for you. They are both right, if we have a blog we should give it the attention it deserves and spend a little time with it.

This weekend I was fortunate to spend in Sacramento visiting many old and new friends at the American River 50 mile race. We are very fortunate to have some splendid athletes turn in some amazing performances with Ellie Greenwood victorious in the women's division and Ian Sharman securing 3rd in the men's division. We also had other top 5 female performances and top 10 men's.

After the race, I was speaking with the charming Ian Sharman and made an interesting observation when asked, "Who doesn't wear Drymax socks?" I looked around and saw plenty, but I was okay with that because that means we have companies to compete with. This was further made clear when I was speaking with Eric Dube as he waited for his lovely wife Tara to finish (top 5 by the way) and we spoke about competition and how grateful we are to have it so we can measure our results in such an absolute way.

IndyCar At Long Beach Grand Prix 2010

I come from a perspective of motor sports, as a huge follower of what was Champ Car now IndyCar and that is what inspired me to seek out athletes to work with and to improve our products for general consumers. Back in it's prime, CART as it was known, was what I felt to be the pinnacle of motor sport (yeah I'm sure I'll hear about my opinion) because they had unfettered competition between multiple chassis makers, tire suppliers and engine suppliers competing on every discipline from road courses, ovals, super speedways and street courses. This produced an arms race constantly improving technology every week or face the possibility to falling behind and becoming non-competitive. Some succeeded some did not, that is what is considered to be survival of the fittest. Now IndyCar has lost it's way over the last few years since there is only 1 engine supplier, 1 tire supplier and 1 chassis provider, other than contrived competition and reliability no technology is being advanced forward because there is no competition between manufacturers (hopefully that will change in 2012 with new rules allowing additional manufacturers).

I recently read Dakota Jones insightful article about sponsorship in ultras on IRunFar.com and felt it was rather well thought out. Anybody who knows ultras and it's market size knows that there is really not any money there to justify throwing huge sums of money at it. As a small company we don't have the resources to do this anyway. We don't pay our athletes, we can't except for two. Full Disclosure: We do monetarily support Jamie Donaldson as her primary sponsor, we also pay a modest stipend to one additional very elite ultra runner who we shall leave anonymous, believe me it's modest. Because Drymax works, our athletes, for which we have over 60, wear our socks, give feedback and do very kind grassroots mentions about us in blogs, interviews and allow us to use their images in ads. Why? First, because they are all very cool people. Second, because for so many of them we have changed the way they compete because they aren't having the same foot issues they did before allowing them to concentrate on the task at hand which is finishing a very long race.

It is with great pride that we attend races and see very elite athletes wearing our socks without us even knowing about it. It happened again this weekend at AR50 when I looked down and saw one of the most accomplished ultra runners in the world wearing our socks (I won't say who since I don't want that person to have a sponsorship conflict without her approval). The athlete said he/she loves them and always looks for one of the two pair the athlete has every time he/she goes out running. I got to tell you it is moments like that that we get a big fat stamp of approval on what we are doing. Additionally, we are seeing many people wearing our socks in the mid pack and bringing up the rear with equally as compelling stories, which we have great pride in being part of those racer's adventure as well.

I will have to give the benefit of the doubt to all sponsors of ultras and their sponsored athletes who participate week in and week out because they aren't there for the vast fortunes to be made, cause there isn't any. We are all there to see where we stack up with other manufacturers on an even playing field. That is why you hear certain runners skip, what they feel, are less competitive races for those that are stacked with fierce competition, so they can see where they stack up, good or bad, sponsors often want to see that as well.

Another big reason why we race, specifically in ultras, is the iconic nature of the events and the accomplishments. We feel that if runners can compete at the highest levels in daunting conditions for extreme distances with minimal foot issues then we can take what we have learned to marathons, 10k's, 5k's and even benefit charity walks. In every running shop you have one person who runs ultras, that person knows all of the players in the sport and what equipment they are using with success. That information is then passed along at retail to the guy who needs to lose 20 lbs to the person who wants to compete in their first marathon.

I could go on and on about why we continue to be part of ultra racing, we have had a blast doing it so far, we enjoy the great people we meet, the places we see, we love the stories we hear and yeah, we love to win. Drymax Socks: Looking Ahead and Back

2010 is over and what a year it was for our little company. We continue to be very excited about what we have accomplished but that was the past and we are continually looking toward the future. Our passion to engineer the best possible socks on the market shall continue as will the desire to listen to constructive feedback to constantly improve our socks.

We are not sheep, we follow science and not trends, so don't look for too many crazy things brought on by chasing fads from us in the coming year. This is not to say we are standing still. We have some amazing advancements that we will be introducing including our completely new V5 line.

Ultrarunning remains our #1 test as to efficacy of our products. This iconic sport allows us to test our products beyond any other threshold we can possibly imagine. If we can keep ultra athlete's feet in good shape then we can be confident that marathoners, diabetics and cancer walk participants will also have a positive experience with our socks.

We also translate this accumulated knowledge to our entirely new Drymax Team Sport line. This new line includes Football, Hockey, Baseball, Softball, Lacrosse, Volleyball, Field Hockey, Basketball and Rugby. It was very exciting this last month to know that many of the D1 football Bowl teams wore Drymax socks, even some of the really big ones:).

We continue to make strides in the medical field working with podiatrists and dermatologists who often suggest that their patients with hiperhydrosis and sufferers of other foot issues wear Drymax socks to assist in keeping their feet dry and healthful. This is incredibly important in diabetics who run a huge risk in foot issues and even amputation for failing to take proper care of their feet.

Having traveled to so many of the big and small ultra races in 2010, I was so thrilled to see so many Drymax socks on the feet of both the 'elite' and recreational competitors. It was with great pride that we saw our socks finish first in so many ultras. Drymax runners won Badwater, Bandera, Rocky Racoon, VT100 and many more. We were even along for the run with Karl Meltzer as he retraced the route of the Pony Express on it's 150th anniversary.

All of the above is made possible from the continual feedback we receive from our ultrarunners. In 2011, our roster of runners continues to grow. As most know, we are a very small company and are limited in resources, so we are hugely honored to have the amazing group of wonderful athletes trusting their feet to Drymax socks. The list is too long to list and for fear of leaving someone out I won't post it. All I can say is that we are grateful to those who continue to spread the word about our technology. Thank you!

Alisa Springman Accomplishes 99th Ultra Race!

Always smiling Drymax runner Alisa Springman is one of the most prolific ultrarunners competing today. Every time we turn around the Mercersburg, PA athlete is running another ultra race! This summer alone she completed not only the Western States but just a couple weeks later turned in a strong performance at Badwater among many other events.

This past weekend Alisa completed her 99th ultra at the Hellgate 100k as the 7th female in a time of 15:58:43 in some pretty rough conditions.

About her experience "Hellgate was a challenge, as always. Midnight start, temps in the 20s, snow on the mountain and an icy, full stream to cross at mile 4, ensuring wet feet for most of the night. I wore my Drymax Cold Weather socks and had NO issues with my feet -- AS ALWAYS!! One pair of socks and one pair of shoes for 66.6 miles of snow, leaves, rocks and some of the most technical trail in Virginia. "

Alisa plans on making her 100th Ultra at the Virginia Happy Trails on January 1, 2011. What a way to start a year!

Jamie Donaldson: 2010 Another Amazing Year!

Drymax has been very, very fortunate to associated with Elite Ultrarunner Jamie Donaldson for a three years now. In that short amount of time she has evolved from an exceptional runner to one of the finest ultra athletes of all time. Her training regiment is unmatched as are her accomplishments with 2010 being another year of extraordinary performances.

Going into 2010, Jamie was already the two-time defending Badwater Women's Champion and record holder, USATF 200,000 Meter Track Record Holder, a multiple race winner and course record holder. In a world of hype Jamie quietly and humbly dominated the field in multiple races. It was alot to live up to, what is so incredible is that she surpassed many of her 2009 accomplishments.

Known for turning in regular 200 mile training weeks up and down Mt Evans and Pikes Peak, Donaldson knew that there tougher challenges from not only courses but competitors in the coming year. Her focus was again on Badwater and the races leading up to that event were going to serve to build a base for that mission.

She lead off the year with a short 38.5 mile warm up at the Ghost Town 38.5 Mile, taking 2nd female.

She followed her Ghost Town performance with a strong 2nd place at the Rocky Raccoon 100 (behind fellow Drymax athlete Liza Howard) turning in an impressive time of 16:54 almost equaling her 2009 winning time of 16:51.

Jamie then went far, an extra 18 miles to make it interesting. She dominated the men and women in the Lost 118 Mile Race in Florida with an insane overall course record time of 18 hrs 36 minutes. That is a pace of 9 minutes 27 seconds for 118 miles!!!

Then came the Philadelphia 100 Mile Race. Jamie threw down the gauntlet again with a 1st Overall, Course Record of an amazing 14:58:23 ONE OF the fastest 100 mile times ever by a female with a stunning 8:59 per mile pace.

To shake things up a bit Jamie popped up to Wyoming for the Rocky Mountain Double Marathon where she earned 1st female, 3rd overall course record of 8:07. This shorter distance victory really shows the range of a very talented runner who once won the Denver Marathon.

Jamie was then off to Europe for the 24 Hour World Championships in Italy. Unfortunately, due to a stomach issue, Jamie didn't live up to her own lofty expectations. She still turned in a gutsy 120.61 mile performance.

Now to focus on her primary goal, to come back and win her third women's title at Badwater against what can arguably be considered the deepest, fastest women's field ever at the event. Jamie, again ran her own race and by mile 42 she had taken command of this epic event. At times, she was even within challenging for the overall lead. At the end she shattered her own record by 35 minutes, finishing in a time of 26 hrs, 16 min, 12 sec, a pace of 11 minutes 40.4 seconds through 130 degree heat and 13,000 ft of elevation change over four hours ahead of 2nd place woman. 3rd overall, she was only 1 hr, 32 min behind the overall winner. Jamie now owns the fastest three female times at this event 2008 - 26:51:33, 2009 - 27:20:18, 2010 26:16:12.

Not able to compete at Leadville, Jamie rested a bit and came back strong at Javelina Jundred event in Arizona. On very little training, Jamie challenged again for the overall win only to come up a bit short taking 2nd overall, 1st female with a course record time of 17 hrs, 11 min.

A month later Jamie traveled to Texas for her final race of 2010, the 24 Hr Ultracentric race. The course was a bit more challenging that anticipated, but Jamie pushed on with the help and encouragement of her crew to post another overall win and a strong 136.98 mile performance on a tough course.

Beyond Jamie's performances is her character. Many fellow competitors can contribute numerous stories of Jamie waiting at the finish line for hours on end to greet friends and fans as they finish their own epic adventures. I have personally been with Jamie when she finished a huge race and she wanted to go back on the course to cheer on fellow runners who were literally 20 hours behind her because of her love of the sport and the value she puts on friendship and friendly, respectful competition.

Most know that Drymax is a very small operation with limited resources, so we are exceedingly thankful for all of the elite and avid competitors who choose to compete and train with our socks. We are especially honored to have Jamie competing with Drymax as her primary sponsor and as our team captain for the last two years. We can hardly wait to see what Jamie has in mind for 2011!!!

What prompted this brief update is the amount of photos we receive from wonderful people who travel this great world of ours. We receive so many notes and stories about so many varied adventures from the hottest place on earth to the top of the world.

This latest comes from Jackie Ginley, she writes about her experience in Nepal with Drymax HD Hiking Socks,

"I was dry and blister free all the way to 18,000 feet. Never even needed the moleskin. Not once. (First time that's ever happened on a long backpacking trip!) I brought polypro liners, which I usually use with wool socks, but I never ended up needing them.)"

Jamie Donaldson One Ups Herself At Badwater 26:16:12

2008, 2009, 2010 Badwater Women's Champion and Record Holder

Gracious, humble and amazing are three words that just begin describing this year's women's champion of the 135 Mile Badwater Ultramarathon. With her most recent race domination Jamie Donaldson now owns the fastest three female times of all time at this most epic race. In 2008 Jamie set the standard at 26 hrs 51 min 33 sec, in 2009 she set the second fastest in 27 hrs 20 min 18 sec and in 2010 she shattered her already incredible standard by 35 minutes with a time of 26 hrs, 16 min, 12 sec good enough for first female and third overall.

Besides running 219 mile training weeks, putting in countless hours preparing and her personal fortitude Jamie also has wonderful chemistry between her and her crew which was very apparent before, during and after the race. In particular, it is just a wonderful thing to see how great Jamie and her husband David compliment each other as runner and crew chief but as two people who truly understand each other and communicate with subtle actions and intuition rather than a dialogue of demands and coaxing to move faster.

Having stability and experience in the team along with the exuberance of a rookie seemed to be the perfect blend to get Jamie swiftly to the finish. Her crew of David Donaldson (4th year), Rob Kapfer (4th year), Eric Meech (3rd year), Sean Meissner (2nd year) & Cecilia Meech (rookie) all had such a wonderful chemistry. Their quiet calm "another day at the office" mentality coupled with an appropriate sense of constructive urgency was incredibly important component in the success of this year's race. David was like 49er Coach Bill Walsh calling the plays and Jamie was like Joe Montana calmly executing the plan flawlessly that was set forth well in advance of the race.

Speaking of the plan, Jamie and her crew executed it without trying to deviate too much. She started slow and her Mt. Evans training plus her years of experience at Badwater kicked in once she hit Townes Pass she maintained a running pace which allowed her to pull away from her female competitors as well as passing many of the elite male runners.

Through the night she picked off one runner at a time greeting the dawn hours ahead of 2nd woman and solidly in 3rd overall and was about 3 miles ahead of last year's overall winner from Brazil. Approaching Lone Pine Jamie was only about 2 miles behind the second place runner and 3 miles behind the overall leader. She was in great spirits with her trademark smile while she was running by an exuberant crowd in Lone Pine waving to everyone.

During the entire BW experience Jamie was being shadowed by a British film crew shooting an hour long episode about Jamie and her extraordinary super human performance. Before, during and after the race the cameras, sound booms and reflectors were ever present. The high and low moments were being recorded for all to see. Along with the film crew was a specially assigned Highway Patrol car to assure safety of everyone involved in the film shoot. Jamie was really under a microscope during the entire race. Here patience often tested with boom mics and big lights but I'm sure she will come across very well on screen. We are very hopeful that this documentary will air in the USA on an affiliate sister broadcaster sometime this year.

Once through Lone Pine her game face was back on and she had to get to the finish. Not satisfied to being first female she pushed ahead with a steady pace as only a true competitor would. I don't think Jamie was overtly trying to break her own record but she really wanted to leave it all on the course and do the best she could. The course record would be just a bi product of this super human effort.

The last few miles to the Whitney Portals were very special. David assumed the final shift of pacing Jamie. There were more smiles and friendly encouragement than anything else. It was very evident how strong the bond is between Jamie and David. She trusts him completely and his confidence in Jamie is endless. They are truly a team that destiny created.

As the finish line approached the Team Donaldson Drymax assembled in their six abreast formation and crossed the line with a sudden burst of exuberant energy. More emotional than 2009 Jamie and her crew were joyous in their accomplishment having crushed her previous record by about 35 minutes. Her performance was good enough to be about four hours faster than her nearest female competitor.

She crossed the line only about 1 hr 10 min behind 2nd place Oswaldo Lopez and 1 hr 32 min behind overall winner Zach Gingerich who was great about waiting to greet Jamie at the finish to offer his congratulations.

During her post race interview her emotions were evident. She was proud of her accomplishment but not boastful. She had done something no other woman had ever done at this race, win three female titles in a row in the three fastest times ever run by a woman and she was immensely thankful to her crew and race officials for such an epic experience.

Project America Run & Observing Memorial Day

Today is Memorial Day and I think the perfect day to talk about Mike Ehredt and Project America Run. I met Mike last July in Death Valley just before the start of the Badwater Ultramarathon. He made the impression of being a quite unassuming man yet serious and passionate about his upcoming mission. Mike, an Army Veteran and retired Postal Clerk was planning a trans American run from Astoria, OR to Rockland, ME with 4,514 American Flags with the names those brave men and women who have given their lives in our nation's service in Iraq.

On May 1, Ehredt began his epic journey and has completed approximately 800 miles. Yesterday, my brother John and sister in law Christen were able to catch up with Mike as he was working his way by their home in the beautiful Bitterroot Valley in Montana. They were both overwhelmed with pride and emotion after visiting with Mike and watching his repeated ritual of honoring the fallen.

About their experience my brother wrote the following to me:

"Christen and I just had the pleasure or meeting Mike Ehredt on the road during his 4,500+ mile run across the nation. Today he expects to reach Lost Trail Pass at the southern end of the Bitterroot Valley here in Western Montana. At each mile he is placing an American flag with the name, rank and hometown of a fallen soldier lost in the Iraqi theatre. The yellow ribbon below the flag also has the chronological number in which the soldier died. Mike is placing them in reverse order.

We've been following Mike on his website as he uses a satellite locating device giving almost instant locations as he traverses the country.

We found Mike to be a humble and soft-spoken individual who speaks proudly of his service in the armed forces. Seemingly benign watching him run, a persona is suddenly filled with emotions when, every mile he stops, plants a road-side flag, stands and salutes that flag, then runs another mile to repeat the process.

This is the best way we as a family could have expected to spend our Memorial Day. We are proud of our county and are blessed to have people such as Mike in our midst to remind us of those who have given their life so that we can maintain our way of life. On this day when we celebrate life and liberty we should take some time to remember how freedoms were given to us through those willing to sacrifice everything to deliver it. We thank all of the men and women of the armed forces who defend us every day.

Team USA Holding Their Own At World Championships

We've been following this race all day long. After 13 .5 Hours both the Men's and Women's USA 24hr Running Teams are in 2nd place.

American Scott Jurek is holding 2nd place overall having completed 156.924 Miles thus far and Serge Arbona holding down 4th place overall.

Drymax is fortunate to have some great athletes in the race as well. Suzanna Bon has been stellar thus far as 5th woman. At the 13:24 she has completed 138.116 km (85.8213 miles).

Drymax team captain Jamie Donaldson has been running her own race starting steady and staying steady thus far working herself up to 7th place with 135.608 km (83.8851 miles).

Jill Perry, who was leading all women for a big part of the race has settled in as 14th woman having completed 129.339 km (80.3675 miles).

Debra Horn is holding a strong pace having completed 123.070 km (76.4721 miles) in 29th place.

Dan Rose is steady in his pace having knocked out 134.354 km (83.2637 miles) and resides in 59th place in the men's race.

Jamie Donaldson Graces Cover of Endurance News

Congratulations to Drymax athlete Jamie Donaldson who has just made the cover of the May edition of Endurance News, a publication of Hammer Nutrition.

This is some well deserved recognition for Jamie who is the defending 2 time champion and record holder of Badwater and will be competing at this week's 24 Hour World Championships in France. Jamie's latest accomplishment is running a sub 15 hour 100 mile race. Jamie will also be returning to Death Valley again this summer to defend her title against the toughest roster of competitors in the history of the race.

We have had a few more reports and photos come in from this past weekend's Philadelphia 100 Mile Endurance Run where Jamie Donaldson completed one of the fastest 100 mile races ever by an American woman ultrarunner with a stunning time of 14 hours 58 minutes.

We were so pleased that Jamie completed this race on such a hard surface without a single blister. Check out this phot of her feet immediately after the race...

We also heard from Drymax athlete and Badwater Veteran Alisa Springman who finished the race in an impressive 20 hour 5 minute PR said "I wore two pairs of (Drymax) Maximum Protection socks (just changed cause the first pair were dirty :). And, despite and entirely flat course with the exact same footstrike thousands and thousands of times, I had no blisters at all. It was the first really warm day of the racing season and even though I was sweating like it was my job, my feet were happy." Even more impressive considering Alisa is coming off competing at the Terrapin Mountain 50k the week before.

Jamie's husband David completed the 50.4 mile course in 10hrs 54min.

This just in... Drymax athlete and team captain just completed the Philadelphia 100 mile in an astounding time of 14 hours 58 minutes!!! Yeah, that's fast! This is a pace of 8 minutes 58 second miles for all 100 miles!

Jamie was treating this event as a training race to learn more about pacing for the upcoming 24 Hour World Championships in France where she will team up with other Drymax athletes including super fast Jill Perry, Suzanna Bon, Debra Horn and Dan Rose along with the rest of the USA team.

The two time defending Badwater Champion stated that it was a pretty amazing day and was especially excited to have her parents at the race crewing their first 100 miler ever which turned out to be Donaldson's fastest!

Husband David threw down 50 miles of his own in under 11 hours with the pacing help of Tony Portera.

Fellow Drymax/USA teamate Dan Rose pulled from the race after 58 miles due to a hamstring issue just to be safe.

Donaldson was also very excited to keep her blister free streak alive with zero blisters wearing Drymax Maximum Protection Socks without tape and without lubricants.

What a wonderful performance by a class act runner. Congratulations on your performance Jamie!

Drymax Athletes Fast At Lake Sonoma 50 & Umstead 100

Drymax athletes continue to throw down some serious performances at elite races early in the year as everyone is tuning up for big races later in the season.

This past weekend at the Umstead 100 Mile Race in North Carolina Drymax sponsored Night Owl Racing member Zach Gingerich smashed the existing course record by over an hour and fifteen minutes with a mind blowing time of 13 hours 23 minutes 02 seconds. Are you kidding me? That is a pace of 8:01 minute miles for 100 miles! Watch for Zach to be a serious contender at this year's 135 Mile Badwater race.

On the women's side Drymax athlete Jill Perry broke her own course record by about four minutes with an incredible time of 15 hours 58 minutes 16 seconds. Jill had perfect feet after the race wearing the Drymax Maximum Protection socks. Fellow Drymax team member Rick Gaston was there to pace and successfully assist Tony to his impressive goal. Tony wore the Drymax Maximum Protection socks and stated simply, "Thanks for another blister free 100!!"

Crosby-Helms Crossing The Finish With Suzanna Bon Holding the Tape

On the west coast Drymax wearer and Solomon team member Devon Crosby-Helms broke the course record, formerly held by Drymax athlete Suzanna Bon, with a time of 8 hours 26 minutes 53 seconds. About her Drymax socks, "Thanks so much! My feet were great despite being dunked in water (up to my knee and thigh some times) every other mile or so. I had one blood blister but it was from a pinch from a callus not from the water. Socks were amazing!" Devon wore the Drymax Lite Trail Running Mini Crew Socks.

Fellow Drymax wearer and La Sportiva athlete Nathan Yanko took second behind Hal Koerner in the overall/men's division with a time of 7 hours 24 minutes 15 seconds. About his experience with Drymax socks during the race Yanko stated, "There was a lot of water and mud to run through this weekend. Every time my shoes started to dry out there was another creek, or mud puddle to be run through (tons of fun). The socks treated me great, not a blister to be had...."

Finishing 2nd behind Helms in the women's division was Drymax athlete Caren Spore in a time of 8 hours 41 minutes 51 seconds. About her race in Drymax Caren said, "After 12 full creek crossings (wet feet all day) my feet were fine. Even though I ended up running in an ancient pair of shoes with half the foam lining on the inside worn out..."

Two spots behind Caren was Drymax/Wasatch Speedgoat Kelly Ridgway in fourth completing the course in 9 hours 08 minutes 48 seconds. After the race she shared her experience with Drymax socks by stating, "I wore the thick orange socks (Drymax Maximum Protection), the same ones I wore in Costa Rica and my feet were perfect. I wish I would have taken a picture of them right after the race, but I was too tired to think! No hot spots, no blisters!!"

Following up in sixth place, after an of course excursion, was Drymax athlete Meredith Terranova in a time of 9 hours 22 minutes 18 seconds. Meredith's feet were "perfect feet as usual!!", according to her husband Paul, after wearing Drymax Hot Weather Socks.

Drymax Socks Don't Wick. They Work!!! The Science Part

The Inside Drymax Fibers Hate Moisture!

We continue to get wonderfully thoughtful reviews and testimonials from athletes of all disciplines. Drymax socks often change the way people compete leaving their feet the last thing on their mind allowing focus on the task at hand. The thing we keep reading about the socks is how well they 'wick' moisture. Well Drymax socks don't wick, they actually work contrary to wicking technology, that's why they work so well.
Now for the sciency science stuff... I hope I don't bore you out of your socks...

Let's start by taking a look at the properties of water since sweat is about 99% water. On a molecular basis, water is known as H2O. This means a water molecule has two Hydrogen atoms and one Oxygen atom joined by a single Covalent Bond. The smaller Hydrogen atoms each carry a positive charge while the larger Oxygen atom carries a negative charge. Water is POLAR, because it is positively charged on one end and negatively charged on it's opposite end.

Since opposite charges attract, water molecules tend to stick to each other because their oppositely charged ends are attracted to each other. This intermolecular attraction between water molecules is knon as COHESION.

Cohesion is why water sticks to itself to form drops. When one water molecule attaches to another it is done by a hydrogen bond. Collectively the hydrogen bonds hold water together.

Wicking fibers (polyester, wool, bamboo, acrylic, etc) are said to by Hydrophilic (water loving) because they ahave positive and negative charges on their surfaces. This attracts they negative and positive charges of the water molecules. Water's attraction to a fiber's surface is called ADHESION. It's the combination of COHESION between water molecules and water's ADHESION to the charged fiber surfaces that produces CAPILLARY ACTION or what we simply know as wicking.

Sounds great right? Well wicking is part of the problem, not the solution. As you learned above, for wicking to take place, water must first stick (adhere) to the fiber's surface. Once wicking fibers get wet, they stay wet and so do you, long after you stop sweating. Science tells us if moisture is attracted to a fiber's surface and the fiber is next to the skin, the fiber will actually hold the moisture next to the skin ensuring you stay wet longer.

Take a look at a wicking fiber sock package, they almost always say that their socks wick moisture 'away' from the skin, but this is only part of the story. Wicking socks will also wick moisture toward and across the skin, keeping skin wet.

If these wicking socks are worn inside a shoe, which I'm sure some of you may do, where/when is the sock or your feet ever going to dry? Evaporation may work in a shirt that is completely open to the air, but this process can not effectively take place inside a shoe.

Even the term wicking means 'completely wet'. The term was derived from the wick inside lanterns like the ones used for camping. Wicking is the process by which fuel oil spreads throughout the wick keeping the entire wick wet allowing the flame to continue to burn. Why would anyone use the term 'wicking' to describe a sock that is supposed to be dry? Regardless of wicking fiber they all should be graded in different levels of wet not dry...

You can't escape the law of physics which dictate that no single fiber technology can attract and repel moisture at the same time. Our competition's socks use only wicking fibers which attract moisture holding it next to the skin keeping feet wet.

Drymax socks provide dryness that only our proprietary two layer system can. Our system works so well because of our self-contained mechanical moisture removal system.

Here's how it works... On a molecular level, moisture can't stick (adhere) to the inner super hydrophobic (water hating) because of the fact that our fiber carries zero molecular charge and is 10 times drier than polypropylene allowing the inner terry loops (43,200 per square inch) to act like a squeegee mechanically lifting sweat off of the skin to the outer hydrophilic (water loving) outer polyester layer holding moisture away from the skin.

Here is some additional things to think about when using Drymax socks. Don't lubricate your feet. Since Drymax socks rely on a lack of a molecular charge to work the introduction of lubricants or even powders may introduce a molecular charge to the socks holding moisture against the foot. Additionally, don't use fabric softener. Have you ever noticed that a luxurious cotton towel on laundry day may feel really nice and soft after using fabric softener? Well did you also notice that it doesn't absorb moisture very well either. Same thing with our socks or any technical fiber, just don't use it (yes this includes dryer sheets). One more thing, don't use bleach with ours or any other socks. First this will break down the Lycra on any stretch fabrics. Our fibers have a silver antimicrobial that is melted in during the extrusion process which will last forever, unless you bleach the socks which will oxidize the silver rendering it useless.

Drymax Socks... On Ice!

Yes, we were 'swept' up with the excitement of curling during this years winter games and had to get involved. Luckily, one of our elite distance runners, Debra Horn or Ohio, happens to also be an elite curler (sp?).

I was thrilled when she approached us to be the sock provider of her women's curling team during the National Championships in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where Team Horn took 7th place in the nation!

According to Horn the four person squad wore, " amazing (Drymax) hockey socks that worked very well for curling. The socks were warm but not bulky."

Congratulations to Debra and her team and now it is down to the business of running far for Debra Horn who is a member of the 12 person 24 Hour USA Run Team who will compete on an international stage in France along with other Drymax athletes Jamie Donaldson, Jill Perry, Suzanna Bon & Dan Rose.

Varlamova Wins Nueces 50 Mile Race

Congratulations to our friend and Drymax athlete Olga Varlamova for her wonderful victory at the Nueces 50 Mile race in Texas. The race consists of three 16.7 mile loops and takes place 186 miles west of Austin.

Her splits of 3:08, 3:22 and 3:27 resulted in a sub 10:00 hour 50 miler at 9 hours, 59 minutes, 9 seconds. This is the first time Varlamova has ran a sub 10 hour 50 miler since 2004. She finished over an hour ahead of her nearest female competitor and ended the day 7th overall.

About her feet Olga said, "The course was extremely rocky and had 2 river crossings per each of the 3 loops (6 times total). The feet held up awesome!"

Brian Krogmann Takes Strong 2nd At San Juan 50k

Brian Krogmann Wear Testing Drymax Max Pro Trail Running Socks

Drymax athlete Brian Krogmann turned in a strong 2nd place in a time of 5 hours and 2 minutes as a last minute entry to San Juan 50k. Krogmann, who treated the race as a training run was also performing the final testing of our soon to be introduced Maximum Protection Trail Running Sock with great success.

About the race he said, "Came in 2nd and for not being really race ready (I) felt really strong for most of the race. Used the test pair of Drymax (Max Pro Trail) and had great success. Just like the Twin Peaks 50 (there were) multiple creek crossings and rocky single track and not one blister or any kind of sore spot. It continues to be a great relief knowing that I can just plow through the creek crossings and know my feet will be dry again in no time!"

About his following day 14 miler, "... went on a 14 miler on Sunday and the last 2.5 miles or so we were running through a make shift creek due to all the water and enjoyed every minute of splashing because I knew my feet would be just fine at the end!"

Brian looks forward to pacing a few people at the Los Angeles Marathon next weekend. He is also looking well ahead to his date with Badwater as one of the early favorites.

Drymax Athlete Evan Hone Shatters Record At Malibu Creek 50K

Drymax athlete Evan Hone turned in a masterful race at the Malibu Creek 50k (31.06855 miles for those of us not fluent in the metric system) over the weekend. The Alaskan runner shattered the existing course record by 26 minutes in what he described as a "mud fest".

Hone's time was an impressive 4 hours 24 minutes 27 seconds which is a pace of 8:30. per mile with elevation gain of almost 6,000'. One particular climb takes the runners from below 500' to over 2,000' in just 4 kilometers (that's steep).

Evan was so quick that his 25k split was just about a couple minutes behind the existing 25k course record. A goal Hone was tempted to achieve but his good judgement not to push helped him achieve his 50k record.

About the race Hone stated, "I was able to run a sold race and bring down the course record by around 25 minutes..." He continued, "... the course was muddy and as usual I had zero feet problems."

Coyote Two Moon Craziness!

Snow Covered Mountains In SoCal?

You bet, it was another year at the Coyote Two Moon Race near Ojai. Last year was sunny this year was rainy with snow along the ridges. Drymax was very excited to once again be the sock sponsor for this one of a kind event. We were so warmly welcomed with positive comments and great feedback from all involved.

This year's race was exciting to say the least with about 2/3 of the field dropping due to the hostile weather and very difficult terrain.

Drymax athlete and ultra running legend Karl Meltzer turned in an amazing performance of 21 hours 5 minutes in what can be considered epic conditions. Starting three hours after the nearest 100 mile competitor and saddled with a 22 hour cutoff all of the bonus and boner points have yet to be calculated so his final finishing position has yet to be determined even though he had the lowest actual elapsed time of the 100 mile competitor.

We were fortunate to see so many old friends and make new ones. All involved were genuinely in love with the sport of ultrarunning and the spirit of the many volunteers emanated throughout the entire festivities.

Even though the weather was harsh every one's attitude remained bright making for a wonderful three days (or two moons) of racing.

Gardner, Crosby-Helms, Howard & Yanko Compete In Drymax Socks

Everyday I hear the stories of amazing ultra-athletes doing incredible things. And even more amazing is the broad spectrum of athletes in the ultra-community. It is a culture of gracious competition and cooperation. Even though it is an individual endeavour nobody endeavours to do it alone. From the 15 hour 100 milers to those trying to make a 60 hour cutoff there is a spirit of inclusiveness and camaraderie among all who compete and those who volunteer at the growing amounts of events throughout the country.

I am also very amazed and humbled by the fact that some of the most elite performers in the world of ultra running choose to compete in Drymax socks. In 2009, Drymax athletes like Jamie Donaldson, Karl Meltzer, Jill Perry, Brian Krogmann and many others completed amazing and inspirational performances across the country.

So when a motorist called police after seeing the 40-year-old cycling naked one afternoon on Akatarawa Rd near Upper Hutt, he was shocked.

Lowe was convicted of offensive behaviour and slapped with a $200 fine, which he refused to pay. Yesterday he took his case to the High Court in Wellington in a bid to overturn his conviction.

"I couldn't believe it, it just wasn't right," Lowe told The Dominion Post. "It's a lifestyle thing – to put clothes on is uncomfortable. It's not about exhibitionism, I'm just uncomfortable in clothes."
His lawyer, Michael Bott, argued that riding naked on a rural road was not offensive, and Kiwis had become more tolerant toward nudity.

He pointed to events such as Boobs on Bikes, the Hero Parade, National Nude Day, Naked Wedding Day and a recent naked cycle on the Central Otago Rail Trail as proof that "we're not as puritan as we used to be".

Justice Denis Clifford reserved his decision. At one point he apologised after chuckling at a photograph of naked people in Christchurch's Cathedral Square.

Lowe, a builder from Johnsonville, describes himself as a "natural athlete". He completed last year's Coast to Coast naked from the waist down, and regularly trains in the buff.

He competed in last weekend's Coast to Coast but wore clothes to improve his time. He can run naked for about two hours before it gets too uncomfortable, but he uses "a lot more anti-chap cream than most".

"I walk around the house naked, I mow the lawns naked, I'll do the garden naked. A lot of smelly, sweaty clothes, why do that when you don't need to?"

He said nobody else had ever complained about his naked ventures, and that his ride on Akatarawa Rd last year coincided with World Nude Bike Day.

Mr Bott said Boobs on Bikes featured bare-breasted woman in G-strings riding down Auckland's main street, and was not deemed offensive behaviour.

But Crown prosecutor Michael Snape said the public was warned about that high-profile event and they did not have to see the nudity if they did not want to.

Lowe said he had no plans to curb his naked ambition. "It would be nice to know that on a stinking hot day, I could just go out and walk naked to Oriental Bay and go for a swim."

Wellington - A New Zealand High Court judge on Tuesday quashed the conviction of a 40-year-old man for riding a bicycle naked on a public road, ruling that his action was not offensive.

Nick Lowe, a Wellington builder, was fined 200 New Zealand dollars by a lower court that found him guilty of offensive behaviour when he rode his bike on a quiet rural road in Upper Hutt, 32km north of Wellington, on last year's World Nude Bike Day.He was charged after a passing motorist objected and called police.

Lowe took his case to the High Court last month, arguing that New Zealanders had become more tolerant towards nudity.He cited nudity in street parades, National Nude Day, Naked Wedding Day and a recent naked cycle on the Central Otago Rail Trail as proof that "we're not as puritan as we used to be".

Drymax athlete Jamie Donaldson has returned home from the Lost 118 Mile Race in Florida having won the overall (men and women's divisions) race as well as breaking the women's record by over five hours and the men's record by three hours! Her 100 mile split of just a hair over 15 hours is amazing (9:00 minute miles) and her finish time of 18:36 was even more amazing.

Jamie Donaldson Dominates Lost 118 Mile Race

This just in... Drymax team captain crushed the course at the Lost 118 Mile Race in Florida finishing 118 miles in 18 hours 36 minutes (a pace of 9:27 per mile). Her 100 mile split was 15 hours 10 minutes (a 9:06 per mile pace). Just incredible!!!

Her performance garnered 1st female, 1st overall, women's course record and overall course record!!!

Jamie said that it rained hard for four hours during the race and she had zero blisters wearing Drymax Maximum Protection Socks.

Five Drymax Athletes Heading To 24 Hour World Championships

We are very proud to announce that five of the twelve American competitors at this years 24 Hour World Championships are Drymax athletes. The 2010 International Association of Ultrarunners’ 24-hour Run World Championship, to be held in Brive, France on May 13-14, 2010.

Jamie Donaldson

Drymax team captain Jamie Donaldson was the top performing American from the 2009 squad with 136.75 miles will be making her return to the championships in what will be a very busy year. Jamie also intends on defending her crown as two-time women's champion and record holder of the 135 Mile Badwater Ultramarathon in July of this year.

Jill Perry

Hot shoe Jill Perry is the current USA 24 Hour National Champion completing 136.3 miles and is the current record holder of the Umstead 100.

Debra Horn

Debra Horn, the current American Women's 50-54 age group record holder for 12 hours will be returning to the competition after solidifying her spot with a 128.92 mile performance at the USA National Championships.

Suzanna Bon

After a break out 134.7 mile road ultra debut at the San Francisco 24 hour race, trail specialist Suzanna Bon will be making her international road racing debut in France.

Dan Rose

Cancer survivor, Dan Rose has been working toward his inspirational goal of making the USA squad for the last few years and his dreams were realized with a very strong 3rd place at the USA National Championships completing a strong tactical race of 139.22 miles.

Other impressive American athletes joining the team for the international competition include Anna Piskorska, Amy Palmiero-Winters, Serge Arbona, John Geesler, Michael Henze, Phil McCarthy and Scott Jurek.

The 2010 USA 24 Hour Run Team may be the strongest fielded thus far.

Donaldson To Defend Badwater Crown... Again

2008 & 2009 Women's 135 Mile Badwater Ultramarathon defending champion and course record holder Jamie Donaldson will be returning to take on the epic run from the lowest part of the USA to the Mt. Whitney Portal (and possibly to the summit) in the 2010 135 mile event

The race, which will take place in July when temperatures can exceed 130 degrees will be Donaldson's fourth. Winning two of three thus far and setting the two fastest women's times in BW race history.

In 2008, Jamie shattered the existing 'unbreakable record' by well over an hour in an amazing time of 26 hour 51 minutes 33 seconds taking 3rd overall. This is 11:56 per mile in some of the most difficult weather conditions known to man for almost 27 hours straight, without sleep over 13,000' of vertical gain and 4,700' of descent. According to the race website the average finishing time is between 44-48 Hours. One must finish under 48 hours in order to earn the coveted buckle and under 60 hours before the course is closed.

In 2009, Jamie was on pace to break her existing record but has slowed by an injury to her upper leg. Jamie still finished with an incredible time of 27 hours 20 minutes 18 seconds, the second fastest time ever by a woman at Badwater by 22 minutes. Jamie's time was strong enough to take a 5th overall in a very strong field with far more difficult weather conditions.

Her 2007 attempt was riddled with blisters and frictional issues. She lubricated & taped her feet and wore a competitor's toe socks and bravely finished in a time of 41 hours 57 seconds. Jamie was leading late in the race and due to these injuries and blister issues she finished as fifth woman and 35th overall.

Since changing her training regiment and making the needed changes to her equipment Jamie has completed two dominating performances at Badwater without a single blister and in the two fastest women's times ever wearing Drymax Maximum Protection Socks.

One thing that is even more impressive than the ability and dedication Jamie brings to the race and it's preparation is her character. Anyone who has had the privilege to spend time with her before, during or after a race knows how incredibly humble and gracious she really is. Never negative, Jamie is always aware and thoughtful of everyone around her, even in the highly charged atmosphere of competition. Jamie personifies everything Drymax admires. We are so very proud to have Jamie competing once again in 2010 as a Drymax athlete and as our Drymax Team Captain. Congratulations to Drymax athlete Dan Rose for his dominating performance at the 2010 Iron Horse 100 Mile Race in a course record of 16 Hours 35 Minutes breaking the previous record by 36 minutes!

About his feet, Rose said, "Aside from the cold and toe-smashing rocks, the race went quite smoothly for me. My Drymax Max Pro socks kept me blister-free for the millionth race in a row... Running 100 miles is almost easy when you don't have to worry about your feet..."

Rose is a cancer survivor who competes to inspire others and show how they too can beat cancer and live life to the fullest after having done so. Dan also has raised thousands of dollars for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute with his running adventures.

This year Dan will be competing as part of the men's USA 24 Hour Run Team in France.

Drymax Athlete's Perform At Rocky Raccoon 100

Meredith Terranova & Jamie Donaldson At Rocky Raccoon 50 & 100 Mile

Congratulations to those who participated in the 2010 Rocky Raccoon 50 and 100 Mile races. In particular Jamie Donaldson and Meredith Terranova both taking amazing 2nd place finishes in their respective races as well as Olga Varlamova who kicked you know what with a solid top 10 performance.

Donaldson the defending women's race champion repeated her 100 mile pace from 2009 within just minutes finishing in a strong 16 hour, 54 minutes, 14 seconds finishing as 2nd woman and 6th overall (that is a 10:08 per mile pace). Local hot shoe Elizabeth Howard dominated the women's field all day with a break out performance finishing 2nd overall with a blistering time of 15:45:03.

Terranova's race was a bit closer coming in as 2nd woman in the 50 mile event and an impressive 8th overall. Her time of 7 hours 12 minutes 42 seconds was a new personal best for Meredith (that is a pace of 8:39 per mile) and was just over 13 minutes behind the women's winner Melanie Fryer who ran a sub 7 hour 50 mile race. Both women's times broke the existing course record by 45 and 33 minutes. Meredith improved her time from 2009 by 50 minutes!

Neither Donaldson or Terranova suffered any blister issues. Jamie wore our prototype Maximum Protection Trail Running Socks which should be available in the coming weeks and Meredith wore our v4.0 Hot Weather Socks. Neither used any lubricants, powders or tape.

Olga Varlamova rocked the course with a 10th place and a sub 23 hour time of 22:55:08. About blisters Olga said, "... I had none, as in 'zero', despite going through some muddy parts through without avoiding (after 2 days of rain in TX), Drymax socks do their job perfectly."

Mattek-Sands Gives USA Tennis Early Lead In Fed Cup

Drymax athlete Bethanie Mattek-Sands gave a brilliant performance this morning against French Aliza Cornet. 140th ranked Mattek-Sands outlasted her 60th ranked opponent by rallying back from a 5-2 deficit in the first set and winning in a tie breaker when Cornet made an unforced error. Bethanie's 7-6(7), 7-5 straight set victory gives the USA an early 1-0 lead over France in the Quarterfinals of the FedCup.

Brazil 135 Competitors Krogmann and Portera And Their Race Feet

Tony Portera's Blister Free Feet After 135 Wet Miles

Drymax athletes Brian Krogmann who finished the the Brazil 135 in 3rd overall with a time of 30:14 and Tony Portera who finished in a time of 53:31 both have some great stories and memorable experiences from their epic journey in South America.

About their feet and experience with Drymax socks during their race here is their candid feedback:

Brian Krogmann stated, "I started out with the Lite Trail Running socks and could have went the entire distance with them but after running through the monsoon the crew wanted me to change shoes so they decided to change my socks. They were in too much of a hurry that they put on the Max Pro sock and ran in that for a little while before I hit mile 109 and at the last check in the crew wanted to change my shoes again so they change my socks as well to the Trail Running v4.... I ended with a small blister on my left toe but that was it. Could not even feel it until the last 1/2 mile when we had to run on the cobblestone to finish. Even through the monsoon and all the mud my feet were dry and had no complaints. The other runners were impressed with the socks and how my feet were at the end of the race!"

Tony Portera stated, "I had a solid blister prevention strategy for dealing with the elements in Brazil. First, I stuck to what has worked for the last year plus, Drymax Socks. AJW and Donaldson Tune Up At Ghost Town 38.5

Drymax athletes Andy Jones-Wilkins and Jamie Donaldson completed a successful warm up trip to the Land of Enchantment turning in very sold performances in the Ghost Town 38.5. Both are 100 mile specialists but they turned in some very impressive times and finishing positions.

AJW turned in a time of 5:19:34 that was good enough for a second overall and was 1:30 faster than his already quick time from last year. Jamie came in with a time of 6:13:12 good enough for second woman and eighth overall.

Both Jamie and AJW were doing the final testing for our soon to be released Maximum Protection Trail Socks. About the test AJW stated, "The Max Pro Trail socks were outstanding! Drymax Athletes Perry & Terranova Win Bandera 50k & 100k

Drymax athletes Meredith Terranova and Jill Perry covered the women's field at the 2010 Bandera 50k and 100k races in Texas.

Terranova won the 50k event by over five minutes in a smokin' time of 5:04:54 over second place runner Jean Herbert. Meredith's husband Paul, also wearing Drymax socks took 2nd place overall in the 50k with a time of 4:14:31.

Jill Perry shared the victory with fellow elite runner Aliza Lapierre in a course record time of 10:33:18.

About her feet Jill said, "My feet were blister free, even going through the rocky terrain, the cold to warm weather. I wore the trail socks (grey and orange) and felt awesome!"

Meredith continued, "It was a crazy cold weekend. The coldest weather that Texas has had in 14 years!!! I have gotten so spoiled with no blisters... I don't even blister when they have grit in them. I LOVE it!!! Thank you." Meredith wears the Drymax Hot Weather sock even in cold weather.

Both Meredith and Jill will be competing in this year's Western States 100. It will certainly be an exciting race!

The pair of Mattek-Sands and Yan proved to be formidable pushing the seemingly indestructable Williams sisters to a third set for the first time in the tournament but the Williams duo proved too strong today eventually topping the #8 seeds 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Congratulations Bethanie on such a wonderful performance.

Drymax athlete and WTA Professional Tennis Player Bethanie Mattek-Sands will be taking her elite tennis game to the quarterfinals in the Australian Open with her doubles partner Zi Yan (China) to face Venus and Serena Williams in the Quarterfinals.

His unofficial time of 30:14 was only five minutes behind 2nd place Brazilian 135 veteran Adao Miranda and a little over two hours behind first place Adilson Ligeirinho from Brazil. Drymax Socks For Goats!

Speed Goats that is! We are very pleased and excited to be selected as the official sock of the Wasatch Speed Goat Trail Running Team. 2010 will only be the 3rd year in existence for the Speed Goats but the 25 member team has become one of the most visible and prolific on the trailrunning scene. Recently Trail Running Magazine noted that the Speed Goats one of the top teams along with Montrail and LaSportiva.

According to Co-Team Director Tim Barnes, "Our 25 members each run an at least 6 ultras a year, most of which are 100 milers, as well as volunteer, race direct, and crew/pace." Barnes continued, "Many of our team members have been writing about how much they have been loving Drymax socks this season. So much that almost our whole team now sports them."

Catching Up With Drymax!

It has been a long time since my last post, for that I apologize. Things have been so hectic gearing up for a very exciting 2010 that I have neglected what has been going with our friends in 2009. The following is a lengthy yet exciting rundown of events since the last post, I hope I don't leave too much out:

San Francisco 24 Hour Champions Brian Krogmann and Suzanna Bon

In San Francisco Drymax athletes Brian Krogmann and Suzanna Bon crushed to course at the San Francisco 24 Hour run. Bon completed 134.7 miles (crushing the women's course record by almost 30 miles) and Brian dominated the field with 140.1 miles (shattering the overall course record by 9.9 miles. About her experience with Drymax Suzanna said, "My feet did beautifully! Nary a blister or hot spot, nor did I change shoes/socks the entire race. I wore the hot weather V4s and was very distressed today when only one came through the wash! I'll have to ransack all my bags to find the other. Huge thanks to you and the whole Drymax team for such a reliable, well made product. I wear nothing else these days." Krogmann had similar results completing the course with zero blisters...

Hung Ng's Blister Free Feet after the 2009 Ultracentric 72 Hour Race

In November Drymax ultrarunner Hung Ng won the 72 Hour Ultracentric race completing an amazing 243.5 miles. Hung said about Drymax, "Drymax socks held up - no blisters - used 3 pairs and ran through light rain. (had to have faith in your product not to keep changing socks!)" Hung continued, "243 miles with no blisters and rainy weather is a testimonial to your product! There were other runners out there in the same conditions suffering through blisters."

Tony Portera had a great result at this year's Javelina Jundred completing the 100 mile race with another sub 24 hour time of 23:42:11. Tony said of his experience, "Thanks for a blister free sub-24 hour Javelina Jundred. I used the trail socks, as did my pacer, Rick Gaston." In the coming year Tony will be going to South America to compete in the Brazil 135 Mile Ultramarathon. Dan Rose

Our good friend and USA 24 Hour Team Member Dan Rose has been busy as well. Dan just finished the very cold Magnus Gluteus Maximus VHTRC's annual "fat ass 50" in 5:02:00. Dan also conquered the 142 Mile Horse-Shoe Trail across Southeastern, PA in an amazing 32 hours, 43 minutes, 14 seconds. In his annal "Stuff I Like" list Dan says this about Drymax socks, "Drymax, that's all you need to know. I've been wearing them for about 18 months now and haven't had a single blister. I pretty much stick to the Maximum Protection versions (with the hot weather versions being great in the summer), and to give you an idea of how well they're made, it took about 1,500 miles per pair before they started to show any wear (and it was on the back of the ankle and not the bottoms!). In November we drove 3,300 miles (round trip) from our Paso Robles, CA offices to Austin, TX for the annual Running Event. This is a very important trade show in the running world where technical running stores are exposed to what is the latest and greatest technology coming to market. We had a great booth and were very fortunate to see old friends and make new ones. In addition we ate things we had no business eating... Texas=Brisket.

Jill Perry's Feet Immediately After 24 Hours Of Running

From Jill Perry, 2009 24 Hour Women's National Champion, "Look Ma! No Blisters! Thank you so much Bob, for your support, for the socks. I'll have to say, I openly advertised how my feet were doing great and many of the 24 hour participants wanted to know what I wore! In an event like this, running round and round on some hard asphalt...it makes it very important to have good coverage for the feet. And another true test...once again, no blisters! Thank you so much! I know your socks made my feet happy and made a difference in my race. "

Jill Perry USA 24 Hour National Champion!

Congratulations to Drymax athlete Jill Perry for her spectacular National Championship performance at the North Coast 24 Hour Run taking place on the banks of Lake Erie in Cleveland, Ohio. Jill was able to complete an amazing 136.01325 miles in 23 hours, 56 minutes, 06.05 seconds.

Jill battled with Ultra Legend Connie Gardner for most of the race pulling away in the later stages of the race. The dominating victory qualifies Jill to be the on the US National 24 Hour Team. Her eventual margin of victory was over 4.5 miles over 2nd place Anna Piskorska. Jill finished an impressive 5th overall.

Other great performances by Drymax athletes include a 3rd place by Debra Horn completing 128.80725 miles and winning her age division. Debra was able to reach 72.96 miles in 12 hours setting a new American Record for her age division (50-54).

Another fabulous result belonged to Dan Rose who finished 3rd overall with 138.71550 missing out on a 2nd by 37.5 seconds behind another ultra legend John Geesler. Dan's story is even more impressive because it wasn't too long ago that he was battling cancer today he is an elite ultrarunner who just reached his longtime goal of making the US National 24 Hour Team. Great job Dan!

It was a wonderful weekend for all involved and we were very excited to be represented at the event by some wonderful athletes. We were also very proud to be the sock sponsor for the race.

Lisa Bliss' Blister Free Spartathlon Redemption

Lisa Bliss Immediately After Running 153 Miles

Drymax is very fortunate to have some of the elite of the elite ultrarunners competing in Drymax socks but the very first elite ultra runner to trust us with their feet is Lisa Bliss. The 2007 Badwater champion continually faced blister issues for many years. A friend gave her some Drymax socks to try and she became an immediate convert and has been competing in Drymax ever since.

Lisa has continually given us constructive feedback on our socks offering unique perspective from not only her athletic but her medical background during her wear testing that has only served to provide newer and better generations of Drymax socks.

This last week Lisa returned to the 153 Mile Spartathlon race in Greece for some redemption. Due to a chronic ankle injury Lisa was unable to complete the race in 2008. This year Lisa was able to not only complete the race but take 3rd woman and 1st overall American in a time of 32 hours 23 minutes.

I just received the following note from Lisa along with attached photos regarding how her feet felt after completing the race:

Hi Bob,

As you've seen, I placed 3rd woman overall at the Spartathlon! I am so happy with my race.

Drymax performed superbly as usual. I changed my socks just once and that was at the base of the mountain at 100 miles where I put on an ankle brace. Since I was already taking off my shoes, I decided to change socks too. A quick glance at my feet at that moment filled me with joy as they looked perfect, like I hadn't even run a mile.

So, despite the 153 mile distance, heat, and 30 miles of torrential rain to the finish that soaked me to the bone, I had not ONE SINGLE BLISTER! Not even a hot spot! I am so pleased with Drymax and how well they performed.

Every runner that kisses the foot of King Leonidas at the finish line is personally escorted to the medical tent where doctors and nurses evaluate you to make sure you are ok. They take off your shoes and wash your feet in a basin of cool water. They were amazed that my feet looked so good!

Thank you for making ultrarunning simpler for me, as I have only to focus on my running. The relief of not having to worry about blisters is liberating.

Jamie Donaldson Named USATF Athlete Of The Week

Congratulations to Drymax athlete and team captain Jamie Donaldson for being named USATF Athlete of the Week!

From USATF:

"INDIANAPOLIS - Jamie Donaldson (Littleton, Colo.) has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after setting an American record in the women's 200,000 meters over the weekend at the 28th Annual Ottawa International 24 Hour Self-Transcendence Race and Masters' 24 Hour Championship in Canada.

The fifth-place finisher at the 2008 24 Hr World Championships, Donaldson destroyed the 18-year old American record by completing 200,000m on the track in 21 hours 1 minute 28 seconds en route to running 214.487 km in 24 hours. The previous record of 21:08:47 was set by Sue Ellen Trapp in 1991. As the overall winner, Donaldson ended her 24 hour run in dominating fashion, as her next closest competitor, runner-up Andrew McLean of Ontario, ran 202.943 km.

Now in its eighth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week."

Previous 2009 winners include elite athletes Tyson Gay, Anton Krupika among many others.

Jamie Donaldson Sets USA 200K Record In Ottawa

Update: Jamie did in fact break the 18 year old 200 kilometer American record previously held by Sue Ellen Trapp. Jamie's 200k time of 21 hours, 1 minute, 22 seconds surpassed the record by over 6 minutes. As soon as the proper paperwork is completed the record will be certified by USATF.

I just received word from Jamie Donaldson moments ago that she and her husband David just completed the Self-Transcendence 24-Hour Race in Ottawa, Canada. Jamie was able to complete 134 miles in 24 hours with a personal best of 100 miles in 16 hours 7 minutes. Jamie's time at the 200 kilometer mark appears to be a new American Track Record.

David was able to complete 75 miles in his comeback race, yes that is 59 miles gap so there will be a bet to be paid, see Jamie's blog for details. http://altitudeultrarunner.blogspot.com/

Lisa Bliss 3rd Woman 1st American At Spartathlon

Congratulations to Drymax athlete Lisa Bliss for her amazing result at the 2009 Spartathlon in Greece. Lisa completed the 246 km (153.85 miles) with a 3rd place women's finish behind two athletes from Japan with an impressive time of 32 hours 23 minutes 26 seconds. Her finish also gave her the title of the top overall American.

The Spartathlon is a legendary ultramarathon beginning in Athens and follows the route that Pheidippides covered to Sparta. Of the over 300 athletes to start the event only 132 made the 36 hour cutoff. Lisa was unable to complete the course last year and had some unfinished business to attend to in Greece for 2009. Job well done!

Great Results Continue For Drymax Athletes

Over the past month or so Drymax athletes have continued their amazing form at some the toughest races on the planet.

Jamie Donaldson takes an amazing 2nd place at the Leadville 100 Trail Run. Her tremendous finish came just over a month after dominating the 2009 Badwater Ultramarathon. The finish of 21 hours 53 minutes solidified her stature as one of the most versitile and dominant ultra runners in the world. Going from what is considered to be the toughest road race to one of the toughest trail races in just 5 weeks with two great finishes is really unheard of! Jamie then went to the Grand Tetons 100 to pace Ashley Nordell to her record setting victory.

Jamie's good friend and fellow Drymax runner Meredith Terranova came off of a great Pacifica 50 to take 2nd at the Headlands 50 followed by 2nd in her class in the Transrockies that takes place over 6 days and 120 miles. About the race Meredith said, "It must be noted that 6 days and 120 miles of climbing and descending through dirt rocks and creeks and not ONE blister!! Thank you for the continued support from Drymax!"

Jill Perry just completed the Monster Marathon as part of her training for the Cleveland 24 hour and 50k in Gibralter. About the experience Jill said, " I did a race called the Monster Marathon which is the hardest marathon trail race on the east coast...running through creeks (almost look like rivers), very steep up and down hills, muddy, technical single tracks... I came in first female and 3rd overall. And...NO BLISTERS, even drenching my feet in lots of deep creeks...my feet felt awesome, another success for Drymax! Felt so good I went out and did another 10 miles that night. Thanks Drymax!"

Brian Krogmann took a hard fought 2nd place with a time of 19 hours 43 minutes 33 second at the Headlands Hundred after taking an unfortunate detour while leading the race. "Went with one pair again for HH and not a single blister even though there were some rocky sections along the course... All in all a great day to be out on the trails."

Drymax athlete Kelly Ridgway completed the Run On The Sly 50k looking to get one last run in before a toe surgery. She found herself winning the women's division and taking 7th overall with a time of 4 hours 57 minutes 12 seconds. About Drymax Kelly said, "I wore my Drymax socks and had no blisters or hot spots. I wore the new 'hyper thin running socks' and loved them every step of the way."

A recent addition to the team is Andy Jones Wilkins who completed three races over an 8 week period including the Western States 100, Hardrock 100 and Leadville Hundred. AJW said, "I used Drymax socks for the first time this year at Hardrock after a podiatrist recommended them. I had terrible foot problems at Western States which really made preparation for Hardrock difficult. The Drymax Trail Running socks were outstanding. In a race in which your feet are pretty much wet from start to finish the Drymax socks successfully wicked away the water all day and night and allowed my already tender feet to survive intact. I was amazed with how the socks were so gentle on my feet and I am looking forward to using them at Leadville." During his Leadville 100 race AJW finished in 19 hours 49 minutes 42 seconds in an impressive 9th place, 1st master and with zero blisters.

Tim Englund just completed competing in the Trail du Mont Blanc with a wonderful result. Here is a brief report from Tim, " Wanted to let you know that I managed to finish the Ultra-Trail duMont Blanc - a 100+ mile race with 31,000 feet of climbing around MontBlanc in France, Italy and Switzerland(http://www.ultratrailmb.com/accueil.php) - in 30:31. This was goodenough for 86th place of 2,282 starters. Of course I wore Drymaxtrail socks the whole way (changing once). They performed perfectly!With all the climbing and descending, I worried I might get blisterson the back of my heel or on my forefoot. I'm happy to say that I did not!" Tim wore our new Lite Trailrunning socks for his epic adventure.

Her crew member Bobby Gil added, ".. I had a great time crewing for Alisa Springman. It was even nicer crewing for her since we had to deal with little to no blister problems!"

Dan Marinsik: "I just wanted to send my heart felt thanks. Blistering at Badwater has always been a bad problem for me. I must say I was a little nervous not taping for the first time however my feet came out of the race nearly perfect. Drymax socks are truly a great product!" Karl Meltzer: "I had NO BLISTERS Bob! My feet look better than when we started, and this is a course where feet are wet the entire time!"

We were very excited to hear that Drymax Athlete Jamie Donaldson is on the cover of the current issue of Colorado Runner Magazine. The honor was earned after her second dominant performance at the 2009 135 Mile Badwater Ultramarathon.

I was contacted by the staff at the magazine asking if we had any photos of Jamie's race. I frantically looked through the 1,400 photos I took at the event and found the photo I titled "Happy Jamie" which was taken a few miles before she reached Stovepipe Wells at about Mile 37 during this year's race.

We cannot say enough how proud and happy we are to be associated with Jamie. This is her first of many magazine covers as she continues to have another impressive competitive year. Congratulations Jamie!!!

Drymax Athlete Bethanie Mattek-Sands Faces Venus Williams

UPDATE: Bethanie had a very competitive match in the 2nd Round of the US Open vs Venus Williams falling to the multiple US Open Champion 6-4, 6-2 . We were all very excited to be able to watch her on ESPN and there were many cheers to be heard through our office everytime time she scored a point. The socks were mentioned several times which drew cheers as well. Great job Bethanie!

We are very excited to be able to watch Drymax athlete Bethanie Mattek-Sands today in the second round of the US Open. She will be facing Venus Williams! The match will be televised on ESPN2 at 1:00 pm eastern 10:00 am pacific on Weds September 2nd.

Bethanie reached the second round after a very solid victory over Iveta Benesova.

Lately Bethanie has been sporting a custom pair of socks we made just for her. They are a retro looking pair of over the calf prototypes.

We wish Bethanie best of luck in today's match...

Andy Jones-Wilkins Now Competes In Drymax Socks

Andy Jones-Wilkins Takes 4th Place @ Hardrock 100 In Drymax Trailrunning Socks

We are very honored and excited to have elite ultrarunner Andy Jones-Wilkins of Ketchum, Idaho, now competing in Drymax socks. Andy is definitely among the elite of the sport recently winning the 2009 Rocky Raccoon 100 mile, the 2008 Vermont 100, 2007 Grand Teton 100 mile events. His performances qualify him as a true elite runner with the following PR's: Marathon 2:38, 50km 3:31, 50 mile 6:55, 100km 9:10 and 100 mile 14:57.

Andy decided to make the change after having his feet ravaged at the Western States 100. He needed a new solution and found them in Drymax socks. Only weeks after taking an outstanding 10th at Western States he competed in the tortuous Hardrock 100 on still very tender feet. He took an impressive 4th place in the iconic event with no significant issues with his feet wearing Drymax Trailrunning Socks.

Andy, a School Headmaster, was born and raised on the east coast before moving west in 1996. From there he began his ultramarathon running career after discovering the rugged, mountainous trails of Arizona. Upon moving to Northern California in 2001 he began participating in 100-mile races that he soon discovered to be his strongest distance. The trails of Northern California proved to be quite good to Andy as he has steadily made his way into the elite level of 100-mile trail races over the past five years. Currently living in the mountain town of Ketchum, Idaho Andy has now discovered the value of high altitude mountain training that he hopes will continue to propel his running career upward. He has a particular love for remote, high mountain, technical trails.

Andy is a married father of three children. His wife Shelly and his three sons (Carson, Logan, and Tully) are his biggest supporters and crew for him at every 100-mile race he runs.

Andy’s remarkable running career has been documented in regional and national publications. Among them are Running Times, The San Francisco Chronicle, Trail Runner, Ultrarunning, The Oakland Tribune, The Idaho Mountain Express and The Auburn Journal. Additionally, in July, 2007 Andy was featured prominently on NBC Television’s Jeep World of Adventure Sports’ coverage of the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run and in 2008 on PLUM TV’s feature story on endurance athletes of the mountain west.

Andy plans on competing in the upcoming Leadville Trail 100 in a few weeks and the Javelina Jundred in October.

A core group of AAI professional guides conduct Guides Choice field tests year round, throughout the world. Jill Perry Takes Blister Free 2nd At Wet Vermont 100

Congratulations to Drymax athlete Jill Perry for taking a hard fought 2nd place woman and 12th overall at the Vermont 100 mile race. An amazing feat considering she spent most of the previous week crewing and pacing for Todd Baum at Badwater. She jumped a plane and dashed back to Vermont making it just in time for check in and then to early start.

About the race she completed in just 19:30:38.7 Jill said, "Just finished Vermont 100 with days of virtually no sleep! I came in second place and boy, was I ready to sleep after that."

Regarding the conditions and Drymax socks, "It was a bit hot, a bit humid... I wore the drymax trail socks...and NO BLISTERS!!!"

The Feet Of A Badwater Champion

So what did Jamie Donaldson's feet look like after dominating the tortuous 135 mile journey from Badwater to Mt. Whitney in just 27 hours, 20 minutes, 18 seconds wearing Drymax Maximum Protection Socks? Well pretty darn perfect that's how...

After Jamie's blister free performance last year some questioned why we didn't show her feet. Well, she was tired and just ran 135 miles and we didn't want to bother her. But to answer those critics here are her feet from immediately after this year's race.

These photos were taken of Jamie and her feet just minutes after completing the race and the interviews that followed. "Do you want pictures of my feet?" Jamie asked. "They're perfect, not a single blister" she continued.

It is important to note that Jamie wore and trained in the socks well in advance of the race, she doesn't use any lubricants that may clog up the sock and she doesn't tape her feet which may hold moisture and soften tissue and create shear points. She used the socks according to our direction and she didn't get a single blister. Jamie also used a sensible pace, had a very experienced crew who kept her properly hydrated and her nutrition was perfect all of which contributed to the condition of her feet.

Jamie Donaldson Dominates Badwater! Again!!!

Jamie Donaldson Immediately After Her Badwater Victory

We just returned from the Whitney Portal where Drymax Athlete Jamie Donaldson just completed another dominating performance covering 135 miles in just 27 hours 20 minutes 18 seconds. She was right on pace to match her performance from last year but her knee began to swell which effected her pace. Still this very impressive time is the second ever ran by a female runner at Badwater with only her 2008 performance of 26:51:33 being any faster. She beat her nearest female competitor Pam Reed by over an hour and a half.

Jamie ran the entire 135 miles without tape or lubricating her feet wearing Drymax Maximum Protection socks without a single blister.

Drymax wishes to congratulate Jamie on another impressive victory done with style and class. Great Job Jamie!!!!! More to come but we're taking Jamie out to celebrate!

The race is on and it is heated... Literally. The race from the lowest and hottest point of the United States to it's highest continues this morning and Drymax athlete Jamie Donaldson continues her quest to repeat as women's winner and does she look great!

At 3:12 am she blew through Darwin with a time of 17 hours 12 minutes. This checkpoint marks the 90 mile point. As of this latest report, Jamie was 5th overall and 1st woman. Jamie ahead of her 2008 record pace, but as everyone knows, anything can happen at this race.

Other Drymax athletes look great too and seem to be in great spirits. Drymax athlete Hung Ng is in the top 20 as is the big surprise young Drymax runner Nickademus Hollon jumped out to a searing pace early from the 6:00 am group. Iris Imhof-Cooper are solidly in the top 30. Leigh Corbin and Anthony Portera have been in great spirits and their crews are doing great jobs.

Above are just a few highlights for the day

OK, I'm not going to sugar coat it.... It's hot here! The car said 133 degrees the thermoter outside the motorhome says 128 in the shade. Where? Furnace Creek, CA the defacto base of the 135 mile ultramarathon from Badwater Basin through Death valley to the Mount Whitney Portal. I am here on a mission to deliver signs and socks to the 14 athletes who will be running with Drymax socks.

It has been great seeing and meeting so many other thus far. It is a virtual who's who of ultrarunning here. If the many of the big names aren't competing they are crewing. A apecial treat today was meeting Valmir Nunes who currently holds the course record.

Another wonderful moment was presenting defending champion Jamie Donaldson with a photo mosaic of all of the photos we have of her competing in Drymax socks over the last year and a half. The mosaic put together shows Jamie passing Dean Karnazes between Keeler and Lone Pine on her way to a record shattering victory last year.

One more quick thing about the weather, it is very hot and dry unlike last year when it was not quite as hot but far more humid. Everyone here is in such good spirits about the weather, hey at least there seems to be a tailwind!

Meltzer 3 for 3 In 100 Milers Wearing Drymax Socks

UPDATE:

I just received a note from Karl and he exclaimed, "I had NO BLISTERS Bob! My feet look better than when we started, and this is a course where feet are wet the entire time! "

This just in, La Sportiva Athlete and Drymax wearer Karl Meltzer has just won his 5th Hardrock 100. His dominating time of 24 hours 38 minutes crushed his own personal best by about 2 hours and is a new record for the opposite direction course. His victory is even more impressive since it has only been 3 weeks since his victory at the Bighorn 100.

Karl has been wearing Drymax socks durng all of his training and victories this year after suffering horrible foot issues last year wearing wool socks during his assault on the Appalacian Trail.

Meredith Terranova Wins & Sets Record At Pacifica 50k

Congratulations to Drymax athlete Meredith Terranova for winning and setting the new women's course record at the Pacifica 50k over the weekend.

Meredith was just flying on the final stages of the race turning in fast split after fast split. She finally caught the women's leader at her final water stop and opened up a 3 minute margin at the finish.

Meredith's final time was 4 hours 53 minutes 21 seconds a new course record (breaking the existing record by about 10 minutes) and strong enough for 1st woman and 6th overall.

About competing in Drymax Hot Weather socks Meredith stated, "The socks were magic, once again!" She continued, "It was a great day, and not one blister...of course!"

Heather Griffith Wins Bethel Hill Moonlight Boogie 50 Mile

Congratulations to Drymax athlete Heather Griffith on her great win at the Bethel Hill Moonlight Boogie 50 Mile race. Griffith completed the race in a speedy 8 hours and 3 minutes as first female and 2nd overall in the field. This is an improvement of over 2 hours and 44 minutes ahead of her previous PR.

About competing in Drymax Maximum Protection Socks Griffith commented, "I no longer train in any other sock! Why would I? Drymax socks have helped me train consistently, under the coaching of Karl Meltzer, at 70-85 high-quality miles a week, without any huge foot problems! Never have a had to change socks or shoes during my long training runs of 30+ miles, nor did I have the need to at the Bethel Hill Moonlight Boogie 50-miler last weekend! On a hot and humid day, and dousing myself with water every 6 miles or so, shouldn't I be dealing with foot blisters that would be detrimental to my racing well? Of course not...because I wore Drymax! On to the win for Overall Female, never feeling an foot pain during the run, with a time of 8:03:32 to place 2nd overall runner! Since my feet kept reasonably dry on that hot and humid day, I didn't deal with any changes in my running form, which kept me not only injury-free but ready to race and win again by the end of next month! Heather's next mission will be to assist in pacing for Drymax athlete Hung Ng at Badwater this coming week then on to the 24-hr race in Wakefield, MA on July 24th.

Sullivan Takes 5th At Western States

Wow! What an event. We just returned from attending the Western States 100 and were so happy to see so many people and meet so many Drymax wearers.

It was an exciting finish of the race with Patagonia superstar Hal Koerner winning the race. We were receiving third hand text messages from Jamie Donaldson that she was getting by team member Meredith Terranova letting us know that INOV8 runner and Drymax elite athlete Kevin Sullivan was in a very tight battle for second. We waited anxiously at the finish line where Kevin came in an incredibly hard fought 5th.

The first time WS100 competitor surprised alot of people dealing really well with the heat and the altitude as well as fighting some knee pain to overcome the very challenging conditions that saw many elites drop from the event.

Kevin and his crew/pacers all wore Drymax socks for the event, with Kevin selecting 1 pair of Drymax Hot Weather socks that lasted him the duration of the race without failure.

Congratulations to Kevin and all of the competitors at the WS100 for a great effort!

We love our athletes. Not only are they all great people, but there is no other way to get the real world data and feedback needed to constantly improve our products. We push the design envelope all of the time and sometimes we fail, but without our ultra athletes telling us this we would never know and never be able to fix the problems before the socks hit the market.

Today we had a nice surprise visit from Drymax ultra-athlete Rick Cheever. Rick will be attempting his first 135 Mile Badwater Ultramarathon next month in Death Valley. In doing so he will be raising funds to help stop ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). Rick stopped by our office today to pick up some socks for what will be 2 weeks in Death Valley to train for the upcoming 135 Badwater Race. He is optimistic and really geared up for the adventure. He has been wearing Drymax for almost a year now and has offered us some great feedback that has lead to several changes in our socks.

Karl Meltzer 2 for 2 In 09 Wearing Drymax Socks

Drymax athlete Karl Meltzer has won his second 100 miler of 2009 in as many attempts by crushing his own record at the Bighorn 100 Mile Race. It was no walk in the park though having been attacked by a moose about 1/2 way through the race.

After 2 separate encounters and a high speed chase to evade the mother moose Karl was free to put the pedal to the metal and crank out an amazing time of 19 hours, 15 minutes, 26 seconds which was over two hours and fourteen minutes ahead of his nearest competitor. He also crushed his own course record by about an hour.

About wearing Drymax Maximum Protection socks for the record setting victory Karl stated, "of course my feet held up, look at the socks I'm wearing!" Karl continued, "It was a somewhat wet course, a few muddy bogs that feet were completely submerged. Lots of mud in the shoes, but no issues with feet. The socks really are the best in the business! Hopefully I can recover well for Hardrock in 3 weeks, that should be interesting."

We are especially proud to be part of Karl's Bighorn 100 victory since it is the 25th of his now legendary ultrarunning career! We are also proud that we are the official sock of Karl's Speedgoat 50k Race and the Hardrock 100 where Karl will be going for his 26th victory. Great job Karl!

Drymax Athlete Sandy Powell Featured In News Leader

Ultrarunning Drymax Athlete Sandy Powell was prominently featured in the her regional newspaper the New Leader, the news source for the Shenandoah Valley. The wonderful article was written about Sandy and her participation in last month's Surgeres 48-hour foot race in France.

Powell, is an educator teaching 5th and 6th grades at the Commonwealth Center For Children and Adolescents, VA and has been teaching for 29 years. In addition she teaches cycling and fitness and fitness classes at AMC Lifetime Fitness Center.

Sandy has been one of the more prolific ultrarunners in the USA having the leading 48 hour race distances in the USA/Canada for the last 3 years with 201.5 miles. She also qualified and ran on the first four USA National Championship 24 hour teams that represented the USA in the World 24 hour championships, in addition she has been part of two teams that have won bronze medals individually placing a personal best of 133.4 miles in 24 hours (6th in the world).

About her experience with Drymax Socks at Surgeres she stated, "I just completed the Surgeres, 2009 invite only race which is run on a 300 meter track for 48 hours. This year, unlike the past two years that I have ran this race, it was very, very hot! (over 95degrees, pretty much both days) I like hot weather but I had not acclimated to this type heat! I have been in this race the last two years and we were blessed with more than an abundance of rain! My feet afterward looked like they had been butchered - blisters, toenails gone, (many of them) , my feet where in a mess needless to say!

Drymax Socks Help Civil Air Patrol Cadets

Major James Breedlove, DPM Examines A Cadet's Foot

Drymax socks is proud to have featured in the Spring 2009 California Civil Air Patrol's official magazine "Bear Facts".

Every year the Civil Air Patrol holds a training encampment at Camp San Luis Obispo, CA hosting 175-200 cadets. At the camp Major James Breedlove, DPM, screened all of the 186 cadets and he determined that 65 were at a greater risk of getting blisters. Normally 20% of the cadets develop blisters. Amazingly, only 2 of 186 cadets (less than 2%) needed to be seen by medics for blisters.

According to Dr. Breedlove, "This amazingly low incidence of blisters was attributed to prescreening and wearing Drymax socks. The near complete elimination of blisters meant a significant increase in training time for the cadets."

The Civil Patrol is a Congressionally chartered, federally supported, non-profit corporation that serves as the official auxiliary of the USAF. CAP provides a valuable service providing important search and rescue services and are credited with saving over 100 lives per year. CAP also provides important humanitarian missions often times in support of the Red Cross and in transporting important medical packages often including tissue and blood. 1

The Cadet program is instrumental in teaching leadership to some very fine young individuals and Drymax was very proud to be a small part of their training experience allowing them to focus on the camp and not their feet.

Drymax Runners Have A Strong Results At San Diego 100

The great news just kept coming in from races all over the country. We are very pleased to report that in addition to Jamie Donaldson and Debra Horn's victories Drymax athletes had very strong showings at the San Diego 100 Mile Race.

Tom Nielson (18:21:25) finished 2nd just ahead of fellow Drymax wearer Brian Krogmann (18:23:27). Drymax athlete Rick Gaston (20:00:25) also turned in a great performance with an impressive 6th place finish and a new 100 mile PR.

Tom reported, "Feet are great to day, no blisters or even hot spots. I will continue to wear only Drymax socks during all my runs."

Brian continued, "A few small water crossings and a rocky course and still no blisters; got to love that." Brian's performance was even more impressive since he has had just a few weeks to recover from his dominating record setting victory at the Keys 100 Mile race.

Rick said about his new PR, "Yes, you can bet I was rushing in the end to try and get in under 20 hours. It was going well until the last 7 or so miles, from the last aid station to the finish. I was spent mentally which made it hard to stay motivated and keep pushing. Nevertheless I'm happy with my performance and my time."

Debra Horn Wins FANS 12 Hour Race

Congratulations to Drymax athlete Debra Horn for her victory in this weekend's FANS 12 Hour race in Minneapolis, MN. Debra completed 70.16 miles in the 12 hours alloted, that is an average of 5.846 mph for 12 hours straight. To make things more challenging, it rained the entire race.

According to Horn, " It rained the entire race and the temperatures were in the low 50s with some wind kicking up half way through the race. I ran the entire race without a sock change although my shoes and socks were completely soaked. I am happy to report that when I took my Drymax socks off at the end of the race I had no blisters."

Beyond just a race, the FANS 12 & 24 Hour Runs are for a good cause. The event supports scholarships for the Family Advocate Network System (FANS) helping inner city kids to college or to other post secondary institutions.

Jamie Donaldson Wins North Face 50 Mile

Jamie Donaldson Winner 2009 North Face 50 Mile Bellingham, WA

This just in, Drymax athlete and team captain Jamie Donaldson won the women's division at the North Face 50 Mile race in Bellingham, WA in a time of 9 hours 42 minutes 41 seconds.

Jamie ran in third for most of the race then warmed up and kicked it in high gear to take the lead toward the end of the race over second place Alison Hanks and third place Allison Moore.

Jamie wore our prototype Drymax Maximum Protection Trail socks on a test mission with zero blisters.

This victory shows the depth of Jamie's ability. She has won on flat tracks, road courses, fast trails and now an incredibly technical 50 mile race.

Drymax Socks In Podiatry Today Magazine

I've written before that winning races is fun but truly helping people is what we love to do. We race to use as a proving ground for bigger things. People don't just have foot issues from athletic endeavours, there are many problems stemming from circulation, hyperhidrosis among others that create real life and death health concerns.

With this in mind we are very pleased and excited to have been featured in the June edition of Podiatry Today magazine with a full page article. In addition, two very well known and incredibly respected Podiatrists were interviewed and gave glowing reviews of Drymax socks. Drymax & The Hardrock 100

There are few races that carry near the prestige and the level of difficulty of the Hardrock 100. The race begins at 6:00 am on Friday July 10th in Silverton, Colorado and will take the participants on a 100 mile odyssey through the San Juan Mountains. The average altitude of the course is 11,186' with a total elevation change of 33,000' with the highest point topping out at 14,048' at Handies Peak. There has been only 1 racer who has ever finished the race in under 24 hours, that is Kyle Skaggs. The event is so difficult that in 2008 out of 141 starters only 98 finished, that is a completion rate of only 70%.

With the above said we are very proud to be named the sock sponsor for the 2009 Hardrock 100. In this year's race everyone who lines up at the starting line will receive a pair of Drymax socks as well as the volunteers. Kevin Sullivan Joins Drymax Sock Roster

We are very pleased and excited to announce the addition of ultrarunner Kevin Sullivan to the stable of elite ultra athletes currently competing in Drymax socks. Kevin has been dominating events for some time and was on a continuous search for a sock that did what it said when I met Kevin at the 2009 Coyote 2 Moon race in Ojai. Soon after Kevin wear tested the socks and become an instant convert.

Sullivan, a partner in a major New York law firm trains in the local parks, forests and reservations around his home in Andover, MA. Between his work in mergers and acquisitions, time spent on the Ironman Foundation as well as balancing a family life Kevin has an erratic training schedule to say the least but he obviously makes it work.

Drymax Athlete Brian Krogmann Dominates At Keys 100

Drymax athlete Brian Krogmann dominated the Keys 100 race in Florida over the weekend in an impressive time of 16 hours, 31 minutes, 11 seconds knocking about 7 hours off last year's winning time.

The Keys 100 is run along US Highway #1, known in the Florida Keys as "Overseas Highway", from Key Largo to Smathers Beach.

Brian was able to finish all 100 miles with zero blisters wearing our Maximum Protection Socks.

About wearing Drymax socks at the race Brian said, "Only went with the one pair of socks that you recommended and did not have to change them at all. Got one hot spot and that was because I was breaking in a shoe that I never wore before."

Great break through win Brian! Congratulations! And kudos to Bob Gentile for his expert crewing!

Drymax Athlete Karl Meltzer Wins Massanutten Mountain Trails 100 Miler

RD Stan Duobinis & Race Winner Karl Melzter At The Finish Of The MMT 100

Congratulations to Drymax athlete Karl Meltzer on a dominating performance winning Saturday's Massanutten Mountain Trails 100 Mile Race in very wet and rainy conditions. Karl's time of 18 hours 29 minutes and 57 seconds is not a record but a tremendous achievement in such adverse conditions. At the time of this report Karl was the first in and his nearest competition looks to be about 2 hours behind.

About Drymax Socks Karl said, "It was textbook! Having no foot issues at Massannutten is almost unheard of because of the nasty rocks, not to mention the 2" of rain that fell on race day!"

This victory marks the 10th year in a row that Karl has won a 100 mile race and his first victory wearing Drymax socks. More to come later! Great Job Karl!!!

Drymax Athletes Donaldson & Horn Help USA to Silver Medal

We continue to be amazed by the accomplishments of our great Drymax Athletes. This continued to hold true this weekend with Jamie Donaldson and DebraHorn helping the US 24 Hour Run Team achieve a first ever women's silver medal against a very strong international field this last weekend at teh 24 Hour World Championships in Bergamo Italy.

Jamie finished 4th overall with 136.8 miles and was the top US woman as well as the top overall American. Debra completed 128 miles and was the 3rd place American women as well as the 3rd overall American.

In addition to having 2 Drymax athletes on the world class team, we were proud to be the sock supplier to the US 24 Hour Run Team. We value data from events like these to improve our products, in addition, as one of the only sock manufacturers still proudly made in the USA, this is pretty cool to be part of the US team, even in such a small way.

Here is a race report from rom Dan Brannen of AUA:

Jamie Donaldson of Littleton, Colo. improved her 2008 World 24 Hour Run Championship finish by one place, finishing 4th at the 7th International Association of Ultrarunners' event held this weekend on a 1K road loop through the center of the Italian city of Bergamo. In doing so, she led the U.S. women's squad to the team silver medal behind France.

Donaldson racked up 220.219K or 136.83 miles to finish 20th overall and top American (man or woman) in the combined men's / women's world title field which featured over 200 of the world's best long-range ultradistance runners.

Conditions were particularly challenging, a combination of unusually warm weather and uneven running surface relegating many contenders to the sidelines and rendering final distances relatively modest for such a strong field. Yet Donaldson and her fellow American distaff scorers, Annette Bednosky of Jefferson, North Carolina and Debra Horn of Shaker Heights, Ohio, as well as 4th American woman Carilyn Johnson of El Paso, Texas - all motivated throughout the day and night by the knowledge that they were podium contenders - each achieved personal best performances.

More Great Results With Drymax!

Do to our crazy schedule over the last few weeks I have been remiss in sharing some recent great results turned in by some of our Drymax athletes.

Tony's Blister Free Feet After 100 Miles

First is the great performance turned in by Tony Portera completing the 100 mile course in 21 hours, 39 minutes and 37 seconds - a new PR by about an hour. About Drymax he said, "...thanks to Drymax Socks, no blisters to talk about.... I continue to be amazed by this product. I don't have to stop during the race to address feet issues, and post-race recovery is so much easier when you don't have to deal with blisters." Tony was wearing Drymax Trailrunning Socks. Great job Tony! Now we have to figure out what is going on with Bob's feet!

Meredith Terranova Braving The Cold at Brew to Brew

Also, Drymax athlete Meredith Terranova turned in her 3rd victory of the year at the Brew to Brew 44 Miler beginning at the Boulevard Brewery, in Kansas City, KS at 5:15 am with a beer and ending in Lawrence, KS at the Free State Brewing Company. Most people run this as a relay but Meredith completed it as a solo effort. Her final time was 6 hours 32 minutes which equates to 8:55.6 minute miles for 44 miles, a time that placed her as first overall female.

About the weather Meredith said, " It was the worst weather I have ever run in. I was overwhelmed and frozen at the finish." Even though the course was very cold and wet, Meredith wore Drymax Hot Weather socks with "no blisters!" for two reasons, first this is the sock she normally wears and you shouldn't change it up on race day, second, although the socks are thin and lite they keep your feet as dry as any other Drymax sock and a dry foot in cold temperatures is a happier, more comfortable foot.

Tim Englund and Lisa Bliss At the Spokane River 50k

Drymax athletes Lisa Bliss and Tim Englund had a great outing at the Spokane River 50k with Lisa finishing in 5 hours 8 minutes garnering 2nd female and Tim finishing in 4 hours 33 minutes, 7th overall in a very fast field.

Recent addition to the Drymax roster of athletes is Rick Gaston who turned in a PR at the Mt. Diablo 50 miler with an impressive 6th male and 9th overall time of 10 hours, 45 minutes. About the race Rick said, "I ran a really good race today. It kind of fell apart on the last 6 miles when I ran out of food but overall it was still a well executed race. I ran hard, chased after a few folks. It felt brutal though; hot, lots big climbs and big descents and technical trails."

Dan Rose Comeback Performance at the Bull Run 50 Mile

Dan Rose took on the Bull Run 50 after not competing for four months trying to recover from a nagging injury. Dan finished in an impressive tie for 10th place in a time of 7 hours 39 minutes.

About his performance Dan said, "I ran an incredibly steady pace the whole way, and most importantly for me, I came out of it injury free... As for gear.. my Drymax Maximum Protection socks kept the blisters away..."

I know I missed a few but I will be making up for lost time in the next few days! Great job Team Drymax!!!

Drymax Named Sock Provider To U.S. National 24 Hour Run Team

It is with great pride that Drymax has become the sock provider to the U.S. National 24 Hour Run Team that will compete in Bergamo, Italy on May 2-3.

We are so excited to be part of this great team made up of some of the most elite Ultrarunners in the world. Drymax athlete Jamie Donaldson was the leading American woman at the last World Championships in Korea completing 136.75 miles for a 5th overall followed by fellow Drymax athlete Debra Horn completing 125.66 miles helping the U.S. women to 4th overall women's team result.

We are hopeful that removing the worry of inevitable blisters by providing a drier more healthful environment for the team's feet will allow the U.S. team to propel past the international competition.

At Drymax, we continue to test our socks in real world situations in difficult conditions all over the world. One such test was spent in New Zealand's Southern Alps for three weeks of difficult climbing and wildlife filming by my brother John MacGillivray.

Jill Perry Dominates Umstead 100 Blister Free In Drymax Socks

We are very proud and pleased to announce ultrarunner Jill Perry of Manlius, New York, as the newest addition to the Drymax stable of elite ultra athletes. Jill exploded on to the scene to the ultra scene to dominate and shatter the women's record at the Umstead 100 with an amazing time of 16:02:27 (that's an 9:37 per mile pace for 100 miles) beating the record set by fellow Drymax athlete Jamie Donaldson in the 2008 race by about 19 minutes. Jamie's '08 time was good enough to be the fastest 100 mile time ran by a woman in 2008 (in the USA), so it will be very interesting to see if Jill's time holds for the year, Jill certainly set a very high bar to beat.

So impressive was Jill's time that it is the 13th fastest time ever turned in at the race behind only some very elite men. She also garnered 3rd overall in the race behind only Dave James and Joe Kulak. Even more exciting, at least to us, was the fact that Jill didn't have a single blister wearing Drymax socks!

About Drymax socks Jill said, "...I truly believe in your socks - I have worn them for my last two races (Umstead 100 miler which I broke the record 16:02, and Caumsett 50k, second place 3:41) and my feet are in perfect condition... not one blister! ... Drymax Socks Featured In Diabetic Educator Magazine

All of the racing is fun but we do have a serious ulterior motive to our involvement in the Ultrarunning world... To save people's feet and their lives.

The rate of foot amputations in the United States from complications of diabetes has increased dramatically, nearing 100,000 annually, according to studies and government statistics.

Amputations are the road to death. The process starts innocently enough because of peripheral neuropathy (numbness of the feet caused by poor circulation.) This condition that effects about 1/2 of adult diabetic patients means that daily inspections of the feet are not only essential but critical. A single blister that goes untreated could lead to an amputation down the road. So prevention is most important.

We use the data collected and the technology developed from our Ultrarunners and carry over to products that may be used to save lives. If you can run 135 miles through Death Valley in 26 hours 51 minutes in the middle of July without a single blister wearing Drymax socks then the chances of a diabetic wearing similar socks suffering a blister may also be greatly reduced.

Evan Hone Finishing In Record Time At The Sycamore Canyon 50k

We are pleased to announce that two of the newest Drymax athletes Evan Hone and Brian Krogmann took first and second at the Sycamore Canyon 50k trail run this last weekend. Hone torched the Santa Monica Mountain course in a new course record of 4:19:03. Hone finished ahead of Drymax Teamate Brian Krogmann by 11 minutes. Fellow Drymax Athlete Luis Escobar finished very respectable 6th overall.

Both Hone and Krogmann are relatively new to ultra running but both have shown their speed early in their respective ultra careers.

About Drymax Evan exclaimed, "First off I have to say I love them. I wore them for the first time in a race in Malibu last weekend and smashed the course record by nearly an hour. My friends Luis Escobar and Brian Krogmann both ran the race and I noticed they were wearing your socks as well. I use to only run in ******* (toe socks) but after tearing my feet up at the HURT 100 in January I went looking for something else." Drymax Athlete Jenn Shelton Sets Record At Tar 'n Trail

Drymax athlete Jenn Shelton won the Tar 'n Trail 6 mile race shattering the course record by 6 minutes 39 seconds with a time of 41:09.

The course is a mixture of trails and roads around and in Lithia Park, Ashland and Hald-Strawberry Park. Erik Skaggs repeated as winner of the overall title.

Shelton wore the new Drymax Hyperthin socks "without a hitch". Jenn is spending time gearing up for her assault on the Western States 100 in just a couple of months...

It is with great pride that we can officially announce Luis Escobar as a Drymax wearer. Luis, along with being a Montrail athlete, is a professional photographer in Santa Maria, CA and many know him through his running but also by seeing him at countless ultra events both domestically and abroad either volunteering or snapping photos for the event.

About Drymax socks Luis said, "In Hawaii, I ran the HURT Trail 100 Mile Ultramarathon. The course is very gnarly, roots, mud and rocks. I completed the course in 30 hours wearing Drymax trail socks the entire way. Not one blister, no problems at all! I don't know how they work - I just know that they do."

Luis' next race is this Sunday in Malibu, a 50k, then the Leona 50 Mile in April, the MiWok 100k in May, the Western States 100 in June and the Plain 100 in September.

Lisa Bliss & Tim Englund Take Wins At Pac Rim

2009 Pac Rim 24 Hour Run Winners Tim Englund and Lisa Bliss

Congratulations to Drymax Athletes Lisa Bliss and Tim Englund for taking victories at the 2009 Pacific Rim 1 Day Run in Longview, WA.

Tim, the defending Champion, took the lead with about 3 1/2 hours left winning the event by covering 126.75 miles. Lisa took the women's race by completing 113 miles in 24 hours. In addition, Drymax athlete Olga Varlamova completed over 100k before calling it a day to preserve herself for future events.

Fortunately, even though the weather was cold and wet, there were no blisters reported by the Drymax wearing runners.

About Drymax socks, Lisa Bliss said, "I have no blisters or injuries, and am completely satisfied with the entire weekend. I met all my goals."

Tim noted, "Despite having a hacking cough and sinus infection, I won and set a pr for 24-hours by 5.75 miles. My feet never bothered me at all during the race!"

Olga Varlamova's Blister Free Feet after 100 Kilometers in 24 Hours

Olga Varlamova added, "When I took my socks off - I had no blisters, not even a hot spot. And my feet felt perfectly fine. This is new to me. And this is an ecstatic news."

Drymax Athlete Bethanie Mattek-Sands Launches New Website

INDIAN WELLS, CA, USA - Bethanie Mattek-Sands, currently ranked in the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour's Top 40 in both singles and doubles, launched her official website on Friday, March 13, 2009.

Mattek-Sands, one of the few all-court players in the upper echelon of the sport and America's No.3 player behind the Williams sisters, is playing the best tennis of her young career. She reached her first Grand Slam second week at Wimbledon last year and her first singles final at Québec City in October; she missed the first few months of 2009 with a hip injury but returned this past week at Indian Wells and hopes to continue her success in the year to come.

Custom designed by Bruce Quiroz of Elemental Studios, her official website is unique and interactive, and includes features such as a flash introduction, ongoing "Bethanie's Blog" and Tour and match updates. It also includes various pages full of information, pictures and video from her past and current matches, and more.

Mattek-Sands began playing tennis at age 5, training at the world famous Evert Academy, and played her first pro event at age 14. Over the course of her Tour career she has won four doubles titles and amassed almost $1 million in prize money. Her outgoing personality has won her fans worldwide both on and off the court; she also is known for an adventurous sense of fashion, having had many stories published on her court attire and the unique personality she has brought.

Mattek-Sands was born March 23, 1985 in Rochester, Minnesota, and currently trains and resides in Phoenix, Arizona. She married former athlete and Phoenix businessman Justin Sands in November 2008.
